Why am I blogging?
I read this great article by SBA on One Cool Site about the human side of blogging. I realised that I a) haven’t really cleared that up to myself, and b) I certainly haven’t let my readers know why I blog. So I thought I’d correct the two mistakes straight away… And if you blog, I encourage you to have a read at One Cool Site as well.
My number one reason for blogging is the love for writing. It has always been the easiest way for me to express myself, and I have been writing for fun since I was 8 years old – I started school at 7, and learned to write my first words then. To me writing has always been more fun than reading, to the point where I can identify with the question: “why would you buy a book when you can write one yourself?” (Granted, I have only written one myself and it was never even self-published, but it wasn’t the point to start with. )
Secondly, I can remember reading Nancy Drew stories when I was a kid (you see there was a time when I did a lot of reading as well) and in one she found a diary of a woman who had been dead for some decades. I found the thought absolutely fantastic. Someone could read what I wrote after I died. It was then that I started religiously writing a diary, and kept it going until I started writing online where I didn’t have to wait to be dead to reveal my inner thoughts to other people… And would be around to hear what they thought of it – definitely a plus!
I always seek a deeper understanding with people, something other than shallow nod and acceptance, something that develops into a give and take relationship. When I blog, I always have that wish inside that someone who totally gets me will read it and respond in a way or another. Quite honestly those people are far and between, but there are some people at least. My husband was one of them, and he totally responded when he found my website (an older version of Sebastyne.net). To a lot of people it would be enough to find that one person, but I’m greedy and want to find that connection of minds with as many people as I can.
I also do enjoy the responses I get from readers. I enjoy it if they get it and love it, and I enjoy it if they get it and hate it, but what I don’t like is when I write something and get misunderstood and either loved or hated for the opinion I expressed with insufficient manner. This is what I think happened a few days ago when I was writing about US politics and after getting continuously misunderstood even after explaining what I meant, I took the whole post down. That is to say I don’t enjoy conflicts if it isn’t leading to anything. (But I do thrive on conflicts that allow me to sort things out and use my communication skills “for good” or to “fight evil”… but that has more to do with running discussion boards and the sort.)
I am also a little obsessed about expanding my readership. I am hoping to one day get a chunk of income by writing, and if people are not interested in what I write, I know that dream will never come true. So I love writing and I am hoping to make a living by doing what I love, whether it is this or bridal fashion design or both, but yeah… No readers mean no money ever honey, and that is not cool.
All in all… I have a romantic idea of exchanging ideas and thoughts, express agreement and disagreement and finding a connection through words. Maybe I am misguided in my search, but until I find a mantra that takes me straight into the soul of humankind I’ll keep writing and blogging.

Tips for non-native speaking bloggers
As you may be aware, I am born Finnish. I started learning English at school at the age of 9. Since then, I have gotten a fairly good grasp of the language, and I am quite proud of my English skills. Still, my Australian husband, who has also had a carreer in teaching English, has taught me a lot of things about the language. Now I wanted to share some of his teachings and some things I have learned about English, that might not come up during normal classes at school. Read the rest of this entry »
