The perfect Barbie & Ken
If you thought, that women need to be as perfect as Barbie, then imagine how Barbie would feel! I’ve been collecting for 4 years now, and have not found the perfect Barbie yet. I have found the perfect Ken, he was the first collector doll I ever bought, and he remains my favourite doll do the day. He still amazes me of how life-like he is.
So, to me, the perfect doll is as much as a human being as plasticly possible. I am very demanding towards my dolls, because it is hard for a doll to be like a person. I am writing this post, because on New Year’s Eve I received a Barbie doll, which is very close being perfect.
Let me introduce you to Alex first, because, he’s like no other Ken has ever been. He is a Mattel original, which people find hard to believe as he is so far from the normal Ken people know. He is sold in a package named Jude Deveraux: Raider Barbie and Ken Gift Set.

The Barbie was dumped quite quickly, her eyes are not lusty like intended, they are either drunk or bitchy, depending on the light, so I wasn’t fond of her to the slightest. I kept her dress though. >;)
His original outfit is rather tacky, I am the first one to admit it, but wait until you put something nicer on him…

I’m going to have a whole lot of images on this post, so I better cut the page in two and have you
To give you an idea why I love this doll so much, I’ll have to show you photos.
To put it simply, the doll can do anything you’d like a doll to do. He has the MaxSteel -action figure’s body, meaning that he is BUILT for action games, unlike most Ken-dolls that are intended for very slow paced role of the perfect (yawn) boyfriend. Most Ken dolls are about as agile as a group of nazis saluting Hitler.
As for Barbie, fully poseable body-types have been around before. Usually they are gymnastic Barbies, who have flat feet and even if they have high heel shoe-toes, their joints are UGLY, forcing them to be dressed in long sleeves and outfits that cover the knee.
Things changed with the pivotal body of Jazz Baby Barbie. The most important aspect of the changes into this body type was the turning wrist and more clean joints in elbow and knee. She also received the neckline of a Model Muse -Barbie, giving her a more realistic torso. If that wasn’t enough, her torso turns, not only from side to side, but she can bend her back underneath the shoulder blades backward or forward or side to side, which makes her very expressive.
Jazz Baby, as much as I wanted her to be, still wasn’t quite the perfect girlfriend for Alex. She’s the closest one I’ve found, but she had a few falls. Her face is not quite as expressive and unique as Alex has. Alex’s expression changes depending on the situation somehow, but hers doesn’t. She has more expression than the average Barbie for sure, but not quite enough. And, to my greatest sorrow, she is a lot taller than Alex. Her legs, to me, are even too long to be appealing they are even longer than those of an average Barbie, which already are way longer than would proportionally be required. Regardless, I think Alex will hang out with her for a long time. Besides, who knows, her personality might be just right!
I haven’t had the chance to really photograph these two together – besides they’re only getting to know each other IRL – but I may be sending you some more photos later on.

A close friend of mine was also really into Barbies. I used to see him scouring the store shelves for AGES, cooing over this, that and the other… over whatever they might look like and be wearing. I don’t know if he’s still into Barbies or not, but I found it strangely endearing.

Some guys are into Barbie, and that’s no wonder because she’s hot… And the doll that she’s based on was actually meant for grown men, not little girls…
Raider Ken is realluy something completely different… I almost want my own doll
And Jazz Baby…! I´m currently bidding it in Finnish “Ebay”… Wish me luck!
Do you know are there more Pivotal body dolls available?
I don’t think there’s another pivotal body Barbie available, but I’m sure Jazz won’t be the last one! And I am wishing you luck!
The images so vivid and the passion for detail so strong, its simply amazing how intensely you see life in them! Commendable, may just appear a flattery but I can imagine what the whole thing has meant for you. Keep going for them!

@ Push – Thank you.
I do love them a great deal, and I am glad I haven’t lost my imagination when I grew up!
The doll she’s based on was meant for grown men? Wow! I honestly did not know that! See, My Dear Hard Drive is not only entertaining, but also educational! :p

@Tony Yes, Barbie is based on a doll called Bild Lilli, who was a German cartoon character. She was in fact, a prostitute. Apparently, Ruth Handler, who owned the toy company Mattel, wasn’t aware of the doll’s back ground at the time, but she thought it was a perfect toy for her daughter, and the perfect basis of a new toy line – and I can’t argue with that one! So next time you hear someone being worried about their Son playing dolls and turning gay, tell them not to worry!
I can’t wait to see the barbies they come out with this year since it’s the 50th anniversary.
This looks like an exceptionally posable pair. They beg the question: do any of the “playline” contemporary Barbies have bendable legs and twist waists, or are they all hard plastic with straight legs? Where’s the fun in that?
The normal playline Barbie has bendable legs, but straight arms, that can be twisted in any direction from the elbow. The legs also twist in many directions from the hip. Playline comes in many different types of bodies as well, some are fully jointed, some even have a bendable waist (back front side to side and twist) but none of them are as poseable as Jazz Baby. They often have one feature or the other, but not to the degree as Jazz Baby. The reason for this, I believe, is the very fragile looking joints, that would not last long in child’s play.
Hmm. Have you looked at OOAK dolls on ebay? You may find a OOAK makeover to do just Jazz Baby's face. There are also doll artists who work on the larger dolls too.
There are some great artist there, Im sure you could find a face Alex would love to enjoy for a long time.
I would do it, but Im just too busy….
oh oh give him lifter shoes and longer pants to cover them up,
Oh I could do it myself, but it's not the face it's the body that makes her more perfect than the others. I have found a solution though. Her legs can be easily changed into the normal high heel gymnast Barbie -type of legs, because both are attached with just a rubber band. I just figured this out this week though, so I haven't had time to find the perfect colour match yet, but that's definitely on the to do list, even though I'll have to sacrifice her beautiful knees and ankles, but the gymnast legs are good enough for me. Just have to paint the toe nails!
I do a bit of OOAK myself, I'm not very good though, but one day I'll buy another pair of Raider + Jazz Baby for OOAK, but for now they're just too expensive (for me) for that.
Well to be honest i never looked Barbie dolls the way you showed me to see them. For me it was just a doll but after reading your post it seems to become alive
. And you have very strong writing skills i must admit it. Keep on posting because i will keep visiting.
Oh yes, Barbie is definitely not “just a doll”. Each one has a personality – some of them you like, some you don't, and some you just love. It has been a while since I wrote this post, and currently these two are my absolute favorites, no question about it.
I have the same Jude Deveraux set! I actually beheaded the Ken, planning to give him a less-bulky body. I'm not sure what to do with my Max Steele body. Are you still looking for another? (I might have a Ken head, though not as handsome, that's a match for the skintone.)
Also! I have rebodied my Barbie from the set, and I'm hoping to put her on a Pivotal body. How do their skintones compare? I'm mainly wondering about giftset head to pivotal body comparison.
You might be interested in Obitsu bodies and Fashion Royalty dolls, if you haven't heard of either.
Yeah I'm still looking for another Max Steele, there's one coming this way, but there's room for more. :p I would say the match with Pivotal and Raider Barbie is pretty good, I can't say for sure because I sold the Raider, but I would imagine them going together fine. I'll ask on my Barbie discussion board if any of my girls at thebdoll.com would have both.
I don't do Obitsu, Fashion Royalty, Momoko or any other doll – I'm fiercely loyal to Barbie. XD
