Sex and the City – the movie

Last night my Mr. Curly (aka. the husband) took me to see Sex and the City finally. Not that I had been in a big hurry to go, but of course you have to see it. If you haven’t yet, stop reading now, because this post will contain spoilers. I will continue on a fresh page so you won’t accidentally read something you don’t want to know yet!

First I have to say it started to annoy me, the feeling of paid commercial all throughout the movie. Half of it was designer brand names and Manhattan, New York. It was too much, but of course no designer could not be left out of such a movie, including a half a dozen wedding gown designers, that had to be put in, even though it was nicely written to the context, and none of it really interfered with the story. But less is more, no doubt.

Secondly, there was some things I absolutely loved. My favourite scene was the abandoned Carrie laying in a bed looking really realistically old, worn out, tired… She looked like a real human being at her worse, no make up or pretentious glamour, just a girl with a broken heart. A fantastic scene. I also loved the way she cried after Big had told her he’s not coming: “Get me out of here.” It was so full of genuine pain, that I didn’t think she had it in her.

I loved Charlotte being so happy. She actually added some realism to the story, as her marriage wasn’t in trouble like everyone else’s was again, suddenly, after 5 years. I hated Jarrod being made to look that old. Men don’t age that fast. I loved that Charlotte pooped her pants. That was completely unexpected. I didn’t like Steve having sex with another woman. He’s not the type that does that.

I liked the way Big acted, even though I don’t believe that the guy in the TV series would have acted that way. He isn’t the type. And a guy who’s a multi millionaire or something, who eats out alone obviously to be around people, couldn’t hack a big wedding? Give me a break. Besides, 200 guests isn’t even close being a big wedding.

But I loved the closet he made for Carrie. That is love. :D And there could not have been a better engagement diamond for the girl… But again… A guy who freaks out because someone tells him he’s crazy to get married, marries her anyway? He was THAT afraid of a WEDDING, but not COMMITMENT? Of course they had to write some drama in, but these sort of lapses in logic just don’t work too well.

But then again, it would have totally blown if they didn’t get married in the end, now wouldn’t it?

  • Well, I must be the exception to the rule then. There was a lot of things that I liked/loved, but on the other hand a lot of things that irritated me too. Same with my Mr. Curly. :p Although he mainly said that it was the "new york, new york" part that put him off, but he wouldn't have had high expectations, as he hated the TV show. :p
  • Sex and the City seems to have a polarizing effect on both men and women... people either love the movie or they hate it
